Method Statement & Risk Assessment for a Mechanical Road Sweeper

 

The Steps that can be taken to help reduce the risks are:-Before starting sweeping operations.

  • Ensure guards on machinery in place and effective for protection.
  • Always wear protective clothing and PPE as required.
  • Take extra care on uneven and/or sloping ground especially when crossing gradients.
  • No passengers to be carried.
  • Secure vehicle during breaks and when unattended.
  • Machine not to be left unattended with engine running.
  • Controls to be kept free of obstructions.

Pre Site Machine Preparation 

  • Strip machine down for cleaning.
  • Empty rubbish collection bag and dispose of contents into waste collection bin.
  • Ensure machine is cleaned using pressure washer.
  • Check oil/water levels and air filter and brush condition, replace brush if required.
  • Fill machine with diesel using specified container.
  • Rebuild machine and replace the rubbish collection bag.
  • Check lights, flashing beacon are working.
  • Load into van using proprietary ramps and secure.

 On Site: 

  • Report to reception/security if required.
  • Unload machine from the van.
  • Put on PPE (ear defenders, gloves, boots and goggles.)
  • Sweep site as required, taking full care and be aware of the surroundings and cars, people etc.
  • Remove the collection bag if full as and when required ensure that the bags are sealed.
  • Once complete check the work area.
  • Bagged waste is returned to the yard and is later disposed of by EA licensed waste collection company. 

Section B- Johnson Road Sweeper. 

  • Ensure that working area cleared of large items of debris before starting sweeping operations.
  • Ensure guards on machinery in place and effective for protection.

  • No passengers to be carried.
  • Secure vehicle during breaks and when unattended.
