Project Safety Management Method Statement

Safe Site Management is vital on any project, this example of a site management method statement describes the main requirements for the safe management of a site.

  • Each stage is to be planned and work carried out in a logical manner and carried out to Architects and Engineers issued drawings.

Most large projects will normally be programmed in advance using Gantt charts produced either by project management software or by spreadsheet by a competent Project Manager/planner. These should be used to ensure that materials are ordered and on site prior to the works phase, and these will allow suitable Labour resources to be in place. During the preplanning and planning phases the works and work areas MUST be subject to a risk assessment and where required a safe work method statement.

The Project Management team should also check the design drawings and determine if the proposed work is safe to carry out, in some cases design and programmed work changes are made after an initial risk assessment.

  • All setting out will be done by a competent person, line and levels will be checked throughout the duration of the build.

The appointed site engineer/s must check the dimensional control coordinates and level and are required to always use closed level traverses to confirm the supplied and new temporary bench marks, field books should be legible and retained.

  • All existing services to be isolated and checked before works. Cable avoidance tools to be used, hand dig trial holes.

This is a vital health and safety requirement, all known services should be clearly marked, any HV buried cables and gas lines should be fenced off where practicable. Experienced persons must use calibrated cable detection tools and a copy of the calibration certificate should be retained.

  • Works will be carried out by trained and experienced persons and be suitably overseen by trained and certified persons.

It makes safety sense to employ the correct staff, for example concrete pours and finishing should only be done by those with proven experience and for example not by carpenters.

Those in supervisory roles should have attended health and safety courses, and be qualified and very experienced in the type of work that will be carried out.

  • Scaffolding erected by qualified persons, to be inspected daily before use.

Scaffolding must only be erected by trained scaffolders and a “safe tag” system should be used showing that the access and scaffolding has been inspected by a trained scaffolders.

  • No un-authorized persons allowed on site during works, steps to be taken to ensure public are kept out of work areas.

Suitable fencing and gates are to be used on sites where required, in addition there should be gate security.

  • Area Inspected before works commence daily, and at suitable intervals during the day.
  • Warning signs where required.
  • PPE to be worn at all times. (personal protective equipment) Gloves face masks etc.
  • All areas to be kept clean and tidy at all times to reduce tripping and slipping.
  • All waste materials to be placed in designated skips and removed by licensed waste carriers only.
